WHAT THIS IS ABOUT

Track geometry defines the critical interface between railroad rolling stock and infrastructure. Geometry issues account for nearly one-third of track related derailments. This workshop provides two days of classroom and field instruction focusing on track geometry concepts, the most complex aspect of track inspection and maintenance. The attendee will learn techniques for identifying, measuring, and correcting problems with track gage, alignment, and surface. The course also addresses the geometry of special trackwork such as turnouts and track crossings. Course content includes measurement procedures using hand tools, automated methods for geometry measurement, analysis of geometry data, restoration of degraded geometry, and modifying existing geometry by changing curves, spirals, and turnouts.

This 2- day workshop includes classroom lecture and exercises. No safety shoes required. Just footwear suitable for track.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Persons with responsibility for or interest in track maintenance will benefit from this class. These include shortline, regional, and Class I railroads; transit railroads; railroad contractors and consultants; state and local government agencies associated with railroad operation, finance, and regulation; and consultants. Familiarity with railroad track concepts and basic math skills are recommended.

INSTRUCTOR

David B. Clarke, Ph.D., P.E.

Dr. Clarke, Research Professor and former Director of the University of Tennessee's Center for Transportation, brings nearly 40 years of experience encompassing a variety of railroad design, inspection, research and education activities. As a licensed civil engineer, Dr. Clarke prepares specifications and designs for railroad track construction and maintenance. He has taught railway related courses including this one, to college students and professionals since 1990. He is active in Railroad related design activities and knows the Industry standards for Design. He has taught internationally. He is active in railroad related committees of AREMA, ASCE and TRB.
