WHAT THIS IS ABOUT

Work Zones is one of the Planning & Engineering Modules in the Road Safety Champion Program. Gain an overview of roadway work zones in rural areas and the minimum standards for various types of work zones covered in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

The primary target audience for this module is planning, engineering, maintenance and construction personnel taking part in the Road Safety Champion Program.

INSTRUCTOR

Todd Morrison, P.E

Todd Morrison is a Technology Transfer Engineer with the University of Kentucky and a road safety advocate. In addition, for the past sixteen years he has worked for numerous Local Technical Assistance Programs. He has taught over 1000 workshops and trained over 30000 individuals. He retired from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet after serving in the Divisions of Construction, Maintenance and Traffic. Todd served for two years as Kentucky’s Safety Circuit Rider helping local agencies identify low-cost improvements to reduce crashes. He also served for two years as a Road Safety Subject Matter Expert for the Tribal Technical Assistance Program. Todd is an ATSSA certified Traffic Control Supervisor, Flagging Instructor, and Traffic Control Design Specialist. He is also a Certified Public Manager and NHI certified instructor.

AGENDA

–             Recognize the purpose of the MUTCD as it is applied to work zones and the definition of a Traffic Control Device (TCD)

–             Explain the fundamental principles and areas that make up a Work Zone

–             Identify the purpose and characteristics of temporary Traffic Control Devices (TCDs) in work zones

–             Compare the temporary work zone options that are available based on common work zone situations
