WHAT THIS IS ABOUT

This course provides guidance and training for field personnel such as maintenance crews, survey crews and utility crews in the planning, selection, application, and operation of short-term work zones. The course material is developed around typical short-term maintenance and utility activities. The training covers the applicable standards for work zone protection as contained in Part 6 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD),discusses the need for proper application of devices, addresses liability issues of highway agencies and individuals, and offers practical exercises to plan, set up, operate, and remove work zone safety devices. The course also includes training on appropriate flagging procedures for these operations.

OBJECTIVES


  • Have a better understanding of the need for proper traffic control through work areas and for construction zone safety.
  • Be familiar with current work zone standards and requirements as contained in Part 6 of the MUTCD.
  • Have a fundamental knowledge of standard traffic control devices, their design, function, and application.
  • Be able to design and install traffic control schemes for short-term operations on two-lane and multilane streets and highways.
  • Understand proper flagging procedures.
  • Be aware of liability issues involving highway agencies performing construction and maintenance operations, and understand guidelines for protecting work zone personnel and their departments in case of litigation.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This course is best suited for state, county, city, and utility personnel who are responsible for establishing traffic controls through short-term utility and maintenance work areas.

INSTRUCTOR

Frank Brewer
Frank is a graduate of The University of Tennessee with a BS and MS in Human Resources - Industrial Training. He began working with TTAP in 1999 as the Training Coordinator. Frank has been teaching the Work Zone and Flagger workshops since 2004. Frank retired from his full-time duties earlier this year but continues to serve as TTAP's work zone instructor.

For those registered and complete the class, certificates will be emailed within two weeks. BOTH SESSIONS MUST BE ATTENDED TO RECEIVE THE 6. PDH's.

REGISTRATION

The registration fee is $120 per person. A city or county employee is eligible for a TTAP scholarship registration fee of $45. TDOT employees must register through their local TDOT Training Office. Forty-eight hours notice will be given to registrants if a course is canceled. Register early! Limited enrollment!
